WEEK THREE

The third week began as usual on Monday with me working on the HIV/AIDS summaries and inputting them

 into excel spreadsheets. On Tuesday we want to the shores and community of Senya to have child labor and

 trafficking interviews.Myself and Megan had to do a follow up on the interviews on trafficking conducted the 

previous weeks together with Hayford.Mamley and Ophelia went through the town to do random interviews in 

the households and Chloe,Justice and Ebenezer went to the shores to do child labor interviews at the shores.

Unfortunately Hayford could not identify thee names of the parents of the trafficked kids and we also did not

 come along with pictures to assist with that.He suggested we visit some households that might have such issues

 but after walking around to a number of households we did not identify any.We decided rather not to waste any

 more time to do random interviews in the households.Our first home had a boy that according to his grandmother 

she very much prepared to support the boy through school but the boy is reluctant and had been home about twice

 that day during school hours.She told us the boy is very good at home and hardworking but has been sent to about 

five schools in the community but aways quits going to the schools.The women sent for him to be called so we 

could speak to him, which myself and Megan did.After we could not get any house with child trafficking issues so 

we met Mamley and Ophelia and we all went to the shores to meet rest so we could conduct more interviews. 

We spoke to about five kids and after headed back to the office.On Thursday we went to a school in Gomoa Fete

 to give our usual talks.Myself,Chloe and Catherina went to one class,Justice,Ophelia and Mamley in another and

In our class the students were pretty much good and participated quite well Freeman,Calvin and Megan to another.

 in the discussions we had.Chloe and I gave the talk whiles Cath wrote on the board.It was a nice time with the kids

 and I gave a cedi(I know its not much) to girl that answered a question quite well.After the talk one girl called Ivy that

 did very well during the talk came up to me and asked if we called help her in her education since she lives 

with her Auntie and doesn't get much support but I could not give her any assurance that that would be possible since

 CHF currently is focused on sponsoring kids at the shores and even with that the funds are just not enough. I felt quite

 sad but all I could do was encourage her.(really wish I could do something and shes very smart too :'( ......) 

After we all went the beach at Tills to cool down and relax,which was quite fun and relaxing at least since it was

 something different from the usual thing. Chloe made a sunflower with the sand and Megan on the other hand made

 a fort that that didnt look anything like one and when I asked or criticised it I got shot with a hand full of sand

(I shouldnt have asked too many questions and made a face lol).After we went back to the office,that is after our 

clothes were dried enough and clean.On Friday we had a general meting and report at the office where all gave their

 report concerning what they did for the week and their experiences whiles partaking in all other activities for the week.

That is for week three.

Last Week in June

The fourth and the last week started on 24th of June and as usual on a Monday with working on the summaries 

on the monitoring and evaluation for the AIDS data collection research.Also I had to do the CLED survey on

 hurt crime on children with learning disability. I went to a school called Jafar Suadic to speak to the Headmaster

 who kindly offered me the opportunity to conduct the survey with the JHS 2 students and it I was successful 

even though they had some problems answering some of the questions. After I came back to the office to type the

 profiles of the children we interviewed at the shores of Senya the previous week.On Tuesday We all thus the child labor

 and trafficking team went to Senya to conduct child trafficking interviews at the homes. Megan and I went to random

 houses to conduct our interviews and due to some changes herself and Freeman had done we got some new information 

about the state of child trafficking at Senya especially children that are sent to Yeji.After we all came together and headed back to the office.

On Wednesday I went to Nyanyano to make arrangements for our child labor talks that we intended to have at Methodist school

(the school that won the trophy on the World child labor day). Unfortunately the headmistress told me that would not be possible 

because they have a lot to do and whole lot of other excuses.I then went to Franklin Memorial Institute but the headmaster was not around 

so I took his contact so I could call him for the arrangements and to inform Megan about the collection of the progress reports.

At 12 noon after waiting at Emmanuels school thus Ebenezer school I met Megan and together we went to all the schools 

that we have kids that we are sponsoring to give them our progress report sheet since the schools did not have any thing like that.

Gladly at Ebenezer we were told one of the kids Emmanuel topped his class and that made me really happy.

After our long walks to all the schools we went back to the office.On Thursday we went to Franklin M I for our talks and

 Catarina,Chloe and I went to class five.We all had a nice time learning from each other and the kids were really good and participated.

After I conducted my survey on CLED and promised to give them a packet of candy next time.........

On Friday I did the coding of the the pictures of the children we interviewed and spent the rest of the time searching

 for grants, and online volunteering.Sad news is John that has been in Ghana for 9months lives on Sunday and Calvin also lives on Monday,

It was nice meeting them and wish them all the best in life.June has been good and fun but July will be better.

MY PROFILE

Emmanuel Ato Yamoah,an online reporter for the prestigious magazine Awake Africa,

is a Ghanaian from Ajumako-Mando in the Central Region.He had his basic education

 at The Acropolis Schools in Accra and after proceeded to Ghana National College where

 he had his secondary school education( Business Major) and was the GHAMSU 

Representative for the Afadu house. In the year he completed his high school education 

he received admission to University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology 

 where he is currently pursuing a bachelors degree in Sociology and Social Work with Economics minor. 

He also has certificates from United States Institute Of Peace in Conflict Analyses,Interfaith Conflict Resolution ,

and Negotiation and Conflict Management. Also from IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre he has certificates in

 Costing and Sustainable Services Modules 1,2 and 3 and then from Solar Energy International he has a certificate in

 Introduction to Renewable Energy. Emmanuel loves volunteering,social services,charity,teaching and children. 

For this reason whiles in school he volunteers with Defence for Children International(DCI-Ghana) and also an online volunteer for United Nations Online Volunteers and Sparked.

He also interns with Cheerful Hearts Foundation every vacation when he is home. On campus KNUST he is the vice president of

 Narrow Gate Evangelism (KNUST), a peer counselor under the Dean of students office and the president of Patriots Ghana KNUST 

session. 

World Child Labor Day with CHF

Second week was quite hectic,starting Monday I had to go to all the schools that would be participating in the world child labor day to deliver their letters and
 the schedule listing the activities they would be participating in and the time schedules for the programme.

 And also I had to help Calvin get his books and timetable from his school.

After a series of long walks I was exhausted and after Calvin had finished with his observation we headed back to the office.

On Tuesday Freeman,Calvin,Megan and I went to all the schools again to do a follow on the schools and also make all needed final arrangements that were to be done before the world child labor day the nxt day.

On Wednesday, thus the "dee day" for the big event I went to Nyanyano quite early to make preparations for the event but not as early as Freeman and Ophelia as usually that were already on the field(really admire those two for that).

After all from CHF and the schools arrived the games began with a short talk from Eric Opoku Agyemang Executive Director of Cheerful Hearts Foundation on child labor and trafficking and then the games began.

The game included soccer supervised by Justice,sack race by Megan,lime and spoon by Chloe,Fill a bottle by Mamley,Ampe by Ophelia, and musical chairs by Douglas and myself. 
Nonetheless we all helped supervise all the games.

 

The items included books and the overall winner thus Methodist School got the trophy and the runner up got a soccer ball.
We all then took a group photo and after all was done headed to  black and white restaurant for should I say lunch or dinner or better still "lundin".

On Thursday, Chloe,Calvin,Freeman,Megan,John and I went to Ebenezer school to give a talk on child labor.I paired with Calvin,John and Megan ,Freeman and Chloe.
We spoke to classes 4,5 and 6 and Calvin and myself handled class 4.

It was a nice time with the kids and they really participated and asked questions.On Friday I continued with the HIV/AIDS campaign files doing a summary for the group attendees and imputing the data into excel
(quite boring,confusing and tiresome).

The legon interns went to Nyanyano together with Freeman to help with a free health screening that was being organized by Patriots Ghana in the schools in collaboration with the GHS. 

After my work was done i went home for the weekend which was awesome spending time with my family since its been quite a while we all came together.My sister wrote her final paper on Friday (completing with BA BUSINESS ADMINSTRATION(HONS.)) and 
Sunday was fathers day so it was a lot of family and fun time.

Hopeful for better weeks. 

 

                 

Second Week Update

The past two weeks of my internship has been awesome at CHF.

During the first week myself,Freeman, John,Calvin,Mamley,Ophelia,Mergan and Justice went to Senya on Tuesday to conduct interviews at the shores of Nyanyano and also at homes for the child trafficking project. 

Apparently the fishermen were out of luck so didnt have a good catch and hence there werent a lot of kids at the shores. 

We spoke to three kids who didnt school at the moment all due to luck of finance for their fees,food and books. 

I noticed that all the kids were like 'my mother says she doesnt have money to send me to school'.I couldnt stop but wonder what are the fathers doing in this town or where are they.

I was quite sad, and one kid actually said he

 spends about 30p on breakfast and then 30p or less for dinner,that is if his mum has enough to give him.

All the kids showed keen interest in schooling and wanted to have a good career in future.According to the CHF rep. At senya, Hayford, most of the kids sometimes have to eat gari without any stew or soup and even he used to do that when he was a kid because his dad was never there for him. This has also led to a lot of teenage girls getting pregnant as early as 12 yrs which on our way back he even showed as a number of the girls.

This was quite shocking and even some were actually married at their tender ages.

We then went to day star academy,a school that John has really done a great job in

. 

We brought with us some books and learning materials that we gave out and also to see the state of the school. I must say John Firestone has really been a blessing to this school,raising funds to put a roof on their heads,painting, providing desks,materials for teaching and learning,helping with the kitchens supplies,starting a garden...........its just awesome.

I pray Gods blessings upon his life for his devotion and sacrifice.

After we took a group photo with the teachers and John gave a brief about the situation at the school and Mamley and Ophelia volunteered to help by teaching at the school.

The following day that it on Wednesday,we went to Nyanyano for our interviews at the shores and also Calvin had to go his school he would be teaching in. We met Emma whom I was glad to see after a year of him not calling to tell me Im a fake since he calls himself the classical Emmanuel.

It was nice to meet him again though and proceeded to the shores. We interviewed a number of kids here and all had almost the same story to tell about their inability to school. One shocking issue was about four kids who happen to have come all the way from Anomabo by sea on an astonishingly small canoe with some fishermen.

Seriously I will be 21 in september but Im not brave enough to do what these ten year olds did.One because Im not that good at swimming and two that boat is..............It was quite a dangerous thing to do and upon speaking with them they told me they all schooled but came so they can make some extra money and dont mind the risk involved.

On Thursday we were supposed to give a talk at one of the communities but since there were new volunteers among as it was postponed and we had an office meeting to discuss our duties,plan effectively and work towards the world child labor day the following week.It was a successful meeting and we were all glad it was done so we know who is in charge of what for the project. 

I was to design a certificate for the event nxt week,coding the profiles of the kids and help John with the social media platforms.Also had to work with Freeman to set up a volunteer opportunity on UNOV which I suggested would be a good platform since I happen tobe a volunteer on there myself. On Friday I worked on the HIV awareness campaign files thus assisting in monitoring and evaluation.

That was that for the week and I had quite a boring weekend afterwards.

IF IT MUST BE DONE THEN IT MUST BE DONEWELL

I began my second internship with Cheerful Hearts Foundation on the 2^nd June 2013. Unfortunately it rained quite heavily so I reported to the office about 10am, but actually the office was already full. After greeting everyone I decided to stay outside since new interns both national and international, and since I wasn’t a “new b “there was no need for me to be present. After staying outside and having a long chat with Douglas who actually had me laughing out loud throughout, we went back into the office. I then introduced myself to the new interns thus from University of Ghana which happen o be Ophelia, Mamley and Justice.

They all happen to be studying Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and are very much interested in volunteerism. Eric asked me to show them how set up their own blogs and other aspects of what they would be involved in. I actually had a lot of catching up to do so I went through the documents, AIDS research questionnaires among others.

At lunch I went to my favorite food joint with Douglas and three other interns Jackie studying health at Cornel Uni., Beatrice from Colorado Uni. and Lauren from Boston Uni. It was a nice meeting them and we actually got to know each other and also about our universities. They actually passed the Fufu test but not as well as Adam Lewis (really miss that extraordinary gentlemanJ). After I came back to the office it was more of reading and researching on the internet.

Feels so good to be back at CHF and Im really in high hopes to learn more and also to be of help any means possible. Thanks to all at CHF for the opportunity and especially Eric and Bright that I learnt a lot from and actually challenged me. Last year unconsciously I had been transformed into a better person and actually learnt some things about myself. I am starting from the man in the mirror, I am asking him to change his ways. I intend to make a change in the world and I am starting from me.
